The project engineers are responsible of the production process as a whole, from design to delivery.
They reconcile the needs of the customers (production start-up of a new product or new installation) with the requirements and constraints. They study the feasibility of the project and evaluates the necessary resources (human, technical, material, etc.). They must supervise the various stages of production while ensuring the safety of processes and personnel.

They make sure that the budget and deadlines are respected, negociating the prices of the raw materials with the suppliers and taking preventive and corrective measures on production lines to avoid costly slowdowns and downtime for the company.
The project managers also make sure that all norms and reglementations in force are being appled and check on the quality of the finished.
Thus, they have a key role as the are organizing and coordinating the production.

Organizational skills at the service of production

The skills of the project engineers are diverse:

Organizational skills: they are coordinating different actors of the production, planning procurements with the suppliers. Engineers who are managing projects are able to negociate prices with the sales departments and take corrective action on the production lines;

Interpersonnal skills: project engineers must be able to reconsile the different constraints and requirements of the different stakeholders (consumers, managers, marketing, operators, suppliers);

The missions of the project management engineers are covering the whol process of production:

Project preparation:

  • Analyse the situation to offer an suitable solution;
  • Study the feasibility of the project with the decision-makers by involving the actors concerned;
  • Define the project timeline and budget, taking into account the specifications and the requirements and constraints of the various stakeholders.

Implementation of the project:

  • Make all the necessary decisions to carry out the project, respecting clients’ contstraints and expectations;
  • Apply all the security measure ensuring the quality of the product and the secutity of staff and equipments;
  • Know how to react to production slowdowns;
  • Implement national and european, even international norms voire internationales for a compliant marketing.

 

Project follow-up:

  • Write the monitorings and analysis reports of the processes and implemented measures to evaluate their relevance;
  • Archive and document all the project documentation documentation for reuse in a future project.

The salary

The project engineering salary varies depending on the company and the professional sector you are working on. At the beginning of a carreer, the average salary is often 2 500 euros per month, to reach 4 000 euros as you gain experience. Globally the salary range is between 38 and 50 000 euros per year, and can reach 60 000 euros per year depending on the specialization. The position of project manager is often obtained after a few years of experience.
